How to Spot and Avoid WhatsApp Scams

WhatsApp is more than just a messaging app – it’s a daily communication tool used by millions across the world. Unfortunately, its widespread usage has also made it a prime target for cybercriminals. Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, using everything from impersonation to malware to exploit unsuspecting users and access their personal or financial information.

Scams like these can be tricky because they look real at first glance. It might be a message from someone pretending to be a friend, a tempting offer from a known brand, or a fake alert from a service provider - each meant to fool you into clicking, sharing sensitive details, or sending money.

This blog will help you understand common WhatsApp scams, how they trick people, and what you can do to stay safe.

Common WhatsApp Scams in India

1. Impersonation Scam (Friend or Family in Need)

Scammers sometimes pretend to be your friend or family member by messaging you from an unknown number. They claim they’ve changed their number and are in urgent need of money. The message may sound emotional and believable. Once you respond, they quickly share a QR code or UPI link and ask you to send money right away.

How to identify:

  • Unexpected financial requests from a new number
  • Refusal to talk over a regular phone call
  • Push for urgency

2. Gift Card or Free Offer Scams

This type of scam involves a message that appears to come from a well-known company, offering a free gift card or voucher. It may include a link that, when clicked, installs malware on your device. In some cases, the scammer asks you to share personal information to “claim” the reward, which they later use for identity theft or account takeover.

How to identify:

  • Promises of free gifts or rewards for clicking a link
  • Unprofessional or grammatically incorrect language
  • Asking for OTPs, bank details or Aadhaar information

3. Sextortion Scams

These scams begin with a chat request or message from a stranger using an attractive profile. The scammer invites the victim to a video call, during which they engage in inappropriate conduct and secretly record the session. Soon after, the victim receives threats demanding money or the video will be shared with their contacts.

How to identify:

  • Avoid responding to unknown profiles with suggestive photos
  • Never engage in video calls with strangers
  • Block and report suspicious accounts immediately

4. Fake Tech Support Scams

Fraudsters pretend to be WhatsApp support representatives and claim there’s a security issue with your account. They offer to help fix it and ask you to verify your identity by sharing your account information, OTPs, or settings. Once these details are provided, scammers can hijack your account and misuse your contacts.

How to identify:

  • They may contact you via WhatsApp or SMS
  • Claim to be fixing a problem you didn’t raise
  • Ask for sensitive account details or remote access

5. WhatsApp Gold Scam

This scam circulates messages inviting users to upgrade to a premium version of WhatsApp—called “WhatsApp Gold.” The message includes an official-looking link. Clicking it can install spyware or give remote access to your device, allowing scammers to monitor your activity and even contact your friends and family pretending to be you.

How to identify:

  • WhatsApp does not offer a “gold” version
  • Never install apps from links received on chat
  • Download updates only from verified app stores

How to Stay Safe: Practical Tips

Being vigilant is the first step towards digital safety. Here’s how you can protect yourself from WhatsApp scams:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp account by enabling 2FA. This ensures your account remains secure even if your SIM card or device is compromised.
  • Verify Before You Act: If you receive a message asking for money, even from a known contact, call them directly using their saved number to confirm the request before taking any action.
  • Avoid Clicking on Suspicious Links: If you receive links from unknown numbers or suspicious sources, do not click on them. These could lead to malware downloads or phishing sites.
  • Never Share OTPs or Personal Details: No genuine service provider, including WhatsApp, will ask for your OTP, passwords or Aadhaar number over chat.
  • Don’t Respond to Unknown Video Calls: Ignore and report any unexpected video calls from strangers. Engaging with such calls can lead to extortion attempts.
  • Use Official Channels: Always download WhatsApp updates or features from the official app store. Never trust third-party links.

What to Do If You’re a Victim

In case you suspect you’ve already fallen victim to a scam:

  • Contact Your Bank: Immediately inform your bank about any suspicious transactions. Request them to freeze your account or block further activities until it’s secured.
  • Change Your Passwords: Update the passwords for your bank account, email, and any other digital platforms to prevent further access.
  • Monitor Your Accounts Regularly: Keep a close eye on your accounts for any unusual activity. Early detection can help prevent further damage.
  • Report to Authorities: Victims in India can contact the national cybercrime helpline (1930) or report incidents online at www.cybercrime.gov.in. Additionally, you can file a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell through the SacharSathi Portal, which offers case tracking.
