Stay Alert: Don’t Fall Victim to Electricity Bill Payment Scams!
Fraudsters are increasingly targeting consumers by sending fake messages and calls claiming that their electricity connection will be disconnected unless an urgent payment is made. These scams are designed to create panic and trick people into sharing money or sensitive details.
What is an Electricity Bill Payment Scam?
In this scam, criminals impersonate electricity board officials or service providers and convince people to pay fake dues immediately. Victims are often directed to click on malicious links, download apps, or share personal banking information under the pretext of avoiding disconnection.
Modus Operandi
Fraudsters typically use these tactics to mislead people:
- Sending SMS/WhatsApp messages warning that electricity supply will be cut off due to unpaid bills.
- Using fake helpline numbers in such messages to establish credibility.
- Asking victims to click on links or download mobile apps for bill payment.
- Requesting sensitive details such as account number, UPI ID, card details, or OTPs.
- Gaining remote access to devices through malicious apps to steal money.
Precautionary Measures
To protect yourself from electricity bill payment scams, keep these precautions in mind:
- Verify authenticity: Always check your bill and payment status through the official electricity board’s website or mobile app.
- Do not trust unknown numbers: Avoid responding to calls or messages claiming urgent disconnection of supply.
- Avoid suspicious links: Never click on links or download apps sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or email.
- Secure your information: Do not share banking details, OTPs, debit/credit card information, or UPI IDs with anyone.
- Save official helplines: Use only the contact numbers available on the official electricity board’s bill or website.
- Enable alerts: Activate SMS/email alerts from your bank to monitor unauthorised transactions.
- Update devices: Keep your phone and apps updated to reduce the risk of malware attacks.
Report such scam/ fraud cases to national cybercrime helpline number 1930 or report on www.cybercrime.gov.in for assistance & immediately report unauthorised cyber fraudulent transactions to the bank, if any.
