Online Security

With the world becoming more digital savvy, our ways of banking are changing too. While the changes are convenient, there are also perpetrators eager to exploit our online lives and ready to fraud us out of our money.

At RBL Bank, we ensure that our customers have a secure banking experience every time. Your bank has put together several guidelines and tools that will help prevent fraud.

Mobile Banking

  • Keep your phone locked: Set up a password/PIN for your handset so it’s not easily accessible to anyone.
  • Don’t keep important information in your phone: Mobile phones are prone to being used to gain banking information. Using malware or emails or apps with hidden spyware, perpetrators may be able to access this information if you save it in a phone.
  • Do not enable auto-fill: It might be a convenient method of quickly filling up boring details in forms but it’s best to keep the auto-fill feature turned off if you want to have a safe and secure banking experience while using Mobile Banking.
  • Avoid unsecure Wi Fi networks: Don’t access your banking account while using public Wi Fi or shared internet networks.
  • Log Out: After your transaction is done, ensure that you log out from the app or website you access via your smartphone.

Internet Banking

  • Think before you click: Banks will never send emails or text messages that include links to our online banking pages. If you’ve received such an email asking for your details, do not click on the links as it may be an attempted phishing. Banks across the world face this issue and advice their customers to be extremely careful about clicking on any links sent to them on emails/SMS that look suspicious.
  • Watch out for Malware: Often suspicious looking emails contain computer viruses or trojan viruses that are deployed by perpetrators to steal your sensitive information. Be careful about clicking on such emails or downloading attachments from them. Download apps and attachments only from trusted sources.
  • Reduce risk with Internet Banking: Utilise paperless options. Transfer money online instead of using cheques. Receive and pay bills online. Register for phone banking and receive timely alerts and updates.
  • Update your password regularly: Perpetrators utilise various ways like phishing, vishing, skimming, spoofing, cyber stalking etc, to get their hands on your banking information. Therefore, it is imperative that you update your details regularly in order to keep yourself secure from fraud.
  • Type URL in the browser: Never click on links received in emails to log-in via internet banking. The best way to ensure online safety and security is by typing the URL in the browser window.
  • Create a difficult password: Don’t go with your birthdate or generic passwords that are easy to hack. Ensure you use letters, numbers and special characters to make your password as complex as possible.
  • Report fraud immediately: If you notice some suspicious activity such as log-in or transfer of funds from your account, report it to the bank immediately.
  • Watch out for Identity theft: Always destroy any piece of paper that contains your login details. Never share your personal information with stranger or third party and regularly update your details with the Bank.

Phone Banking Safety

  • Safeguard your details: The first and most important thing you should know is that any bank official will never ask you for your password, PIN, OTP, CVV or card number. It will be perpetrators who will make you reveal sensitive details in order to gain access to your account. Always keep your details confidential.
  • Hide your PIN: When you are asked to type in your PIN (Personal Identification Number), ensure that no one watches your PIN while entering in the device.
  • Avoid public places: When you use phone banking, ensure you’re not in a public place as you might be asked for verification details. It is best to avoid public places for such things to make sure no one overhears sensitive information.
  • No 3rd Party caller: Phone banking facility is to be availed by account holders only.

Credit & Debit Card Safety Tips

  • Keep it safe: Always ensure that you keep your credit and debit cards in a safe place.
  • Sign the card: As soon as you receive your card, ensure that you sign it.
  • Memorize the PIN: Do not write the PIN number anywhere. It’s best to memorize it and keep the PIN to yourself always.
  • Destroy the PIN letter: When you receive the details of your card PIN, destroy the mailer in which the PIN is mentioned.

ATM Security

  • Say NO to sharing details: Do not share your ATM card details and PIN with anyone.
  • Do you have your card? Never forget to take your card once you’ve completed your transaction.
  • Look for suspicious objects: Ensure that no cameras or other suspicious devices are attached to the ATMs while you’re making transactions. It’s always advisable to cover the keyboard with one hand, and enter your PIN with another, so that your PIN is secured from being visible.
  • Stranger danger: Never allow strangers to assist or watch you while you use the ATM.
  • Count your money: Remember to count and check the notes dispensed.
  • Do not leave the transaction receipt: Once you’ve completed your transaction, ensure you do not leave the transaction receipt behind (if you’ve opted for it).
  • Change your PIN regularly: It’s advisable to change your ATM PIN regularly.

Cash & Cheque Transaction Safety

  • Never fold bank notes: Always try to keep them as straight and neat as possible.
  • No stapling bank notes: Or scribbling on them. Damaging bank notes in anyway is a strict no-no.
  • Handle with care: Always handle bank notes with clean and dry hands.
  • Record cheque details: Every time you issue a cheque, ensure you record the details of the person you’re giving it to, the date, amount, etc.
  • Keep cheque book safe: Always keep your cheque book close to you. Never leave it unattended or in places where other people can access it.
  • Count the number of cheques: As soon as you receive a new cheque book, it is best to check if the number matches to that of what was assured to you. If you find a discrepancy in the number of cheques, report it to the bank immediately.
  • Never sign blank cheques: Whenever you’re issuing a cheque, ensure that you add the person’s name and exact amount for the transaction
  • Cross the cheque, if needed: If you’re transferring money to another account, you must ensure to cross the cheque. This way, the amount mentioned on the cheque is only transferred to the bank account of the payee, whose name is mentioned on the cheque. Thus, reducing the chances of it being misused.

What do we do to ensure that you have a safe and secure banking experience every time?

At RBL Bank, we take online security seriously. That’s why we’ve implemented various ways in which we make your online banking transactions as safe and secure as possible. Listed below are some ways that we use to achieve this.

  • OTP (One-time Password): To ensure that the transactions taking place in your account are carried out by you, we send OTP or One-Time Password to your registered mobile number. To continue with the transaction, you will be asked to input this OTP number. If you receive a one-time password that you were not expecting, report it to the bank immediately
  • Notifications & Alerts: If we notice suspicious activity taking place in your account, we will notify you immediately via call. The message may be a notification, but it will never ask you to click on links or download attachments or ask for answers to your security questions in order to proceed.
  • System Security: Using state-of-the-art technology, we strive to make every online banking transaction as safe and secure as possible. We use advanced computer systems with firewalls, intrusion detection capabilities and anti-malware programs.
  • Last Login Details: Every time you login, check the last login details visible to you in your account. If it matches your last login activity, it means your account is as safe and secure as it can be. However, if the last login details do not match your activity and shows signs of suspicious activity, immediately report this to the bank.

How you can protect yourself from online & offline fraud?

  • Watch out for scams: Phishing, Vishing, Cyberstalking, skimming, etc are some of the many scam perpetrators use to trick you into sharing your personal details. Watch out for these scams and don’t click on links, emails and attachments that look suspicious
  • Update passwords regularly: Your username and password are the only elements stopping perpetrators from accessing your data. Make sure you update both regularly, once in two months at the very least. Use random passwords with use of letters, numbers and special characters. Don’t opt for the most common or relevant passwords as those are the easiest to crack.
  • Use secure websites: Never click on any link embedded in an email; it’s safer to type the link into your browser. Read the URL carefully as most phishers set up identical websites for fraudulent activities. If you notice a spelling error in the URL or think a website looks unsafe, don’t take the risk. Stop all activities right there.
  • Keep personal information safe: If you keep a copy of your information in your phone, always set up a PIN/Password to keep your phone locked. If you store the bank mailers containing your account information, keep it safe in a locker or someplace that is not easily accessible.
  • Avoid social engineering: Do not share valuable information on social media as most attackers use human interaction to gain information. Keep your details private and be wary of any connection/friend requests from people you don’t know. You can avoid being a victim of a social engineering attack by being suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, SMSs or emails from individuals asking about personal/internal information. Avoid sending sensitive information over the internet before checking the website’s security. It’s also advisable to install an anti-virus software that could protect your system from fraudulent activities.
  • Secure your internet connection: It’s advisable to never use public networks to carry out banking and financial transactions. However, you must also ensure that your personal or home connection is completely secure. Set up a password so strangers don’t have access to your internet connection.
  • Shred documents before discarding: If you’re throwing away any documents that has personal information on it, ensure that you shred the document completely before discarding it. Perpetrators are known to use to mail theft to steal people’s identities
  • Delete suspicious emails: Emails are one of the most used ways to access people’s private information. If you come across any emails in your inbox that look suspicious or has been sent by someone who isn’t on your contact list, delete the emails without opening them. If you do open them, be wary of clicking on any links or attachments as such files have malware and viruses designed to enter your system and scan for sensitive information.

Implementing these tips and tricks in your everyday life will ensure that you have a secure banking experience every time. It’s also important to maintain online security in today’s digital age as so much of our lives are already out there in the world for everyone to see.
